AI Specialist with Geospatial Experience Salary €70,000

Here’s a job that promises a better environment.

Don’t worry, we’re not going to sell you the benefits of working in the green sector. We know you’re already working in the field – maybe sometimes in an actual field. We know you want to use your AI/ML and geospatial expertise to make a meaningful ecological impact – this job offers all that and more.

But the real appeal of this newly created role is the inspiring, progressive working culture of the business.

They’re a startup, formed in 2022, backed by strong investors and brimming with optimism about the potential of the concept behind their business – a revolutionary approach to environmental conservation.

Join their 55-strong team and you’ll be part of a highly collaborative team working on intellectually challenging work where AI/ML intersects with environmental monitoring.

The team are based all over the world, with remote-friendly offices in Germany. They regularly come together, whether that’s online for round-table discussions, to solve-problems team to team, or for their Monday ‘whole company’ meeting. And twice a year, there’s a fully expensed company gathering – the last one was at a retreat in the Alps.

It helps everyone feel connected to the wider mission. The team and the platform they’re building is more important than your job title here.

So, in short, the grass is definitely greener here.

A valuable idea

The company’s founders have academic and commercial expertise in in resource economics, societal change and technology. They believe that the only way to protect nature is to give it identity and a value.

The business is developing a revolutionary approach to environment conservation focused on shifting land-use incentives towards nature positive practices. At the heart of this is an innovative platform that bridges business and nature to help land stewards and investors to manage natural capital.

You’ll be using your skills to develop the platform, working alongside international experts in ecology, science, AI, engineering, business and finance. Everyone’s perspective is valued here.

It’s intellectually challenging work, solving complex problems and exploring novel approaches. You’ll have the satisfaction of helping to transform the way business and investors value nature, and of seeing your models deployed in real-world conservation projects. It’s a chance to make a truly global impact.

Where you fit in

At the heart of the platform is an AI-based measurement, reporting and verification model, fed by geospatial and ground data. You’ll be central to developing this, creating and defining AI/ML models that accurately track natural capital metrics – things like biodiversity, carbon, water and soil quality.

A typical day could include helping adapt geospatial analysis for different geographic contexts or enhancing in-house species identification capability. There’s a lot of technical variety. You’ll be working on AWS and Google Cloud, using Docker for model deployment with flexibility to choose frameworks/tools within the Python ecosystem plus access to hi-quality satellite imagery and diverse ecological datasets.

What you can add

Above all, you’ll need to share the company’s passion for environmental conservation and sustainable land use.

The lack of hierarchy means that you’ll need to be naturally collaborative, confident in your technical decisions and comfortable working with changing priorities. Initiative is essential too – you’re someone who proactively explores new approaches, suggests improvements and takes ownership of problem-solving.

Beyond that, we’re looking for a data scientist or AI engineer with a strong geospatial background who ticks as many of the following boxes as possible:

  • Experience specialising in site-specific model development rather than global-scale research.
  • Expertise in deep learning and machine learning, applied to geospatial challenges – for example, satellite imagery and ecosystem monitoring.
  • Proficiency handling geospatial data processing, segmentation techniques, and remote sensing analytics.
  • Strong understanding of Python and modern ML frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch.
  • Comfortable working with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Google Earth Engine) and MLOps best practices.

About the working environment

We’re open minded about where you’re based although Germany and South Africa would be good for collaboration opportunities. The culture is hugely flexible and inclusive – teams work across Munich, Berlin and remotely. There are no rules about when you’re in the office and accommodations for colleagues who are neurodiverse or differently abled.
